Firhouse 1st Junior Interschools Challange 2009
Saturday Morning on the 3rd of October 2009 once again saw Members of the the Carrick on Suir Taekwon-Do School standing outside the hurling pitch in the center of town with Doboks and sparing gear packed in their bags, ready and willing to do battle to uphold the reputation of the school. This time however it would be different. This time there would be no black belts competing. This time there would be no senior and more experienced members of the school on hand for to give advice or words of encouragement This time it would be up to the Junior Members of the Mr Tobins Schools to uphold the reputation of the South-East.
The members of Mr Tobins  Carrick on Suir school ,and one member of Ms Audrey Condons School in Kilmacow boarded the bus all ready and willing and not one of them over 11 years of age.
The tension was eased and new friendships made as they  soon became aware that they were not alone. Mr Tobins second school from Fethard was there, ready to join forces together and make good as one team on the day.
Once the Kids had the adults all in our seats the bus started its journey.Uneventful in many ways, the usual coffee stop with our  potential warriors livening breakfast for some non assuming travelers, and then it was on our way again.
When we got near to the borders of the "Big Smoke" we let technology guide us in the guise of a Sat Nav.
This all seemed foolproof until we found out that the destination we were looking for was not in the system. Was this Espionage? (possibly caused by Dave who is a computer buff and managed to get there before us} We solved the problem by doing a bus tour of Tallaght and eventually disarmed the technology and asked someone for directions.
11.15 saw us entering the grounds where we were greeted by the sight of Mr Pollock waving his arms above his head   in both a gesture of relief and welcome.
All the competitors were registered and the combatants were told their parents would be fed with regular helpings of tea, coffee and sandwiches  (Thank you Firhouse TKD) which was was quite comforting to them.
The day then got down to business. The Pattern section first. To make the meeting less harrowing for some of the students that were new to the competative side of Taekwon_Do, all contestants were allowed perform the pattern of their choice.. This showed some of the higher belt member performing patterns that they had learned in their "earlier" days but where still perfecting as should be the case.
An obstacle course was on offer for the lower ages and belts. This was demonstrated by Mr Pollack in person ( all I can say being a colour belt myself is look at the pictures) very gracefully. Loads of fun was had by the younger members and first timers with this and made them all feel at ease.
Sparring was then on the agenda. Students competed within their age and height group and not in sections per rank of belt colour. I personally was very impressed with the way that the higher belt colours implemented  the tenets of Taekwon-Do as is taught to them  and showed all of Courtesy, Self control and Integrity.Holding back and scoring their points while at the same time not being a bully. The lower belts whilst matched against them, showed indomitable spirit  and perseverance, wanting to do there best and trying to match the skills of their opponent. All bouts of the day where ended with all exchanging hand shakes and no egos or bodies were bruised.
The day ended with the Special Tech section. With some dramatic sights and alas then it was time for us all
to board the bus and head home.
Laden with medals the contestants collected us parents and led us to the bus. A most enjoyable day was had by all.

Once again thanks to people such as Mr Keane, Mr Tobin, Mr Lannigan Julie Tobin and the all the other umpires for  giving up their Saturday.

Well Done Mr Pollock and all involved
