The ancient law of the Orient "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth" was strongly upheld and sometimes resulted in very serious injury or even death.Because of this, and since the system of free sparring as we use today, had not been developed, it was impossible for a student  of martial arts to practice the skill of attack and defence against other opponents. This led  to Individual advancement being hampered until  the first patterns were created
.Patterns we know them today are mostly fundamental movements,  representing either attack or defence techniques whilst being performed in a preset sequence
The student preforming the pattern  deals with several possible imaginary attackers, and  uses certain attacking and blocking tools to defend or attack  from different directions. In this way performing a pattern  enables the student to go through many fundamental movements needed in an order helping to develop sparring techniques, improve flexibility and flow of movements, become familiar with  body weight transfer and develope body  and breath control, , and gain confidence in some of the newer techniques that they have been trained in.
From the point of an Instructor or Examiner, the performance of a pattern can show how well a student is advancing and what aspects of the art needs to be worked on and also measure how well the interpretation of techniques are being understood. This helps the Instructor to work with the student of aspects which have not yet been mastered or need to be further developed. This in turn leads to the art staying pure and true to the origanal form
The student performing the pattern should begin and end each pattern on exactly the same spot and should keep the correct posture and facing at all times, one should display correct muscle tenseness or relaxation for critical movements, perform the pattern without stiffness but showing rhytmatic flowing movements showing realism in each move and also know the purpose or each move and their names in both Korean and home language
