Two questions that are frequently asked is what is Taekwon-do ? and why is it one of the most prefered Martial arts used worldwide today ?
To answer these questions we must first look at the history of the Art and go back to the roots. Developed and moulded by the Founder of Taekwon-do General Choi hong Hi 1918- 2002, Taekwon-do with the literal meaning of " The Art of Hand and Foot" has grown and become what it is today. One of the most powerful and potentially lethal of all the unarmed self- defense or combat techniques used today.
Taekwon-do is a military art used by the Korean army as their main unarmed fighting weapon and is also one of the most poplular martial arts used by civilian peoples of many cultures races and creed. It can be practised by the old or young as a self defense or can be enjoyed as a sport or be used as a fitness regieme that can bring the feeling of contentness and well being to all who choose to study it.
Why Taekwon-do ?
Taken from the ancient arts of Karate and the Korean arts of Taek Kyon and Soo Bahk Do in which General Choi Hong Hi was already expertly trained, science was then added and combined together with the movements of the others arts mentioned Taekwon-do was born and has grown into what it is today.
Whilst other Martial arts aim at teaching fighting techniques , Taekwon-do as well as training a student in these, also teaches other aspects of life. The honest and truthful way of living. Courtesy, Integrity, Self-Control, Perseverance and an indomitable spirit are the tenets and belief of those who have mastered the art and this is what is taught by those who pass on their knowledge to others.
Respect is shown and given to all members, Courtesy is offered at all times. Self-Control, Perseverance and the Indomitable spirit is taught and given to us at every stage of our training. The simple art of receiving these feelings and actions from other people in turn lead us to offer them to others.
Once you have learned how to share and recieve these tenets or beliefs along with a knowledge that you can defend yourself , you will walk with your head high and a happiness, pride and a feeling of belonging, that comes from being part of the Taekwon-do Family.
