U.K.T.A OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS GLASGOW 2009
As we sat in the lobby of our hotel in Glasgow waiting for the command from our Instructor and leader Mr Paul Tobin, to move out, the excitement and tension was starting to build. It was no longer something in the future but it was here and now. All the Saturday afternoons, all the extra training that we had gone through, all the worry and the thousands of possible outcomes that had ran through each of the individuals minds that sat there trying to look calm and uneffected was about to become a reality.
The early morning training session that started at 6.30, to me came as a relief and ended for most people I would imagine, a night of worried and broken sleep and the knowledge that this time tomorrow morning come what may it would be all over. After the light training session Mr Tobin asked us all to group in a linked circle. We formed a bond of brothers and sisters in arms. We were one unit. Nobody else outside that unit at that time mattered .
Mr Tobin stood in the middle of our united circle , and through his eyes and the truthfulness that he spoke with he lessened our fears and made us all know that we were capable of being champions. We were no longer alone we were all one.
All the us who undergone the hard extra training sessions, now stood with arms around each other knowing that we were well and truly prepared . The students from Mr Tobins school in Fethard, Miss Condons two students from Kilmacow Tkd who train with us constantly and my own Carrick on Suir school were now all one for today . A team, all there to support each other . We hadn't come all this way to lose.
Maybe the 400 people didn't notice another 40 people enter the hall, maybe they didn't see the four Tricolours being hung high on the southside wall of the Kelvin Hall, maybe they didnt see the crests of Fethard, Kilmacow and Carrick on Suir Taekwon-Do on the back of our jackets. They definatly did not hear the words that Mr Brendan McGarry as he looked us all in the eyes as he stood huddled with us telling us of the pride he felt for us all. Once again the words he spoke lifted us so much that what the Kelvin Hall did notice was the roar of
GO FETHARD....GO KILMACOW..........GO CARRICK ON SUIR.
Then they knew we had arrived.
As the morning went by the victories for our schools started to mount up and the clinking of medals being worn around the necks became louder. This gave confidence to those still waiting to participate and also increased the drive in us to want to add to this count and to make Mr Tobin's constant training for us pay off.
Parents who had traveled with us to support their own stood now at the sidelines with pride watching not only their own but also becoming a part of the school in their own way. Tom and Dave even enquired about joining the schools and should soon be wearing Doboks of their own. These will be ordered soon for them!!!!
The day ended with us all on a high and a feeling of having done our best and knowing that win lose or draw that we had taken part in the UKTA Open Championships 2009 and more importantly we showed that the red and black colours of Carrick on Suir Taekwon-Do dont run......
